Cybergoth is an eye-catching and vibrant subculture, stemming from styles such as Goth, Techno and Rave. It emerged in the 1990’s and since then has become a recognisable and distinct style of its own known for bold colours, futuristic accessories and layered clothing. In this post, we will delve into the iconic culture of Cybergoth.
Most Cybergoth outfits involve black as the main colour with added pops of bright neon, resulting in a unique and recognisable style. Mesh tops and corsets are often pared with bright leg warmers and miniskirts for a gothic yet SiFi look. Futuristic materials such as latex, metallics and PVC are commonly used along with accessories like goggles, platform boots and long, synthetic, neon dreadlocks to capture this eye-catching aesthetic. Masks that cover the nose and mouth and echo ‘fallout masks’ are sometimes featured within this style, they also include pipes that attach to the outfit. Uniqueness and customisation are key in Cybergoth culture, from handmade clothing (a very ‘punk’ attribute), to adding spikes to shoes to make them your own, all of these things are a way for all Cybergoths to express themselves in their own desired way without the fear of criticism.
Bright makeup and facial piercings are often included in the look. While some Cybergoths do not opt for permanent alterations to their bodies, they are features of alternative styles and have been for decades. The makeup often matches the colours of the outfit which other than black are usually monochrome and every aspect is well planned out.
I find Cybergoth so interesting because it goes far beyond just clothing; it is a vivid expression of individuality and personality with a focus on creativity and dystopia. While some people may be unfamiliar with Cybergoth culture, in my opinion it is one that is a cocktail of other styles with recognisable elements as well as its own, one-of-a-kind aspects. Despite not being as well known as traditional Goth, Cybergoth has withstood the test of time and will hopefully continue to present its neon SiFi signature for years to come.
