John Galliano is a British Fashion designer, born in Gibraltar of Italian descent. He studied fashion at Central Saint Martins in London where graduated from in 1984 after presenting his graduating collection 'Les Incroyables' which featured outfits heavily inspired by the French Revolution.
Eventually, Galliano went on to design for Dior in 1996 after moving to Paris in 1989 where he continued to rise in popularity due to his Haute Couture and ready-to-wear collections, showing his versatility and ability to design for many different customers and clients. Most famously, Galliano designed the chartreuse Chinoiserie gown worn by Nicole Kidman at the 69th Academy Awards in 1997. The mustard straight dress featured a slit up the leg, wide neckline and floral embroidery around the top. This has been said to be Galliano's "landmark moment" as a designer.
Due to various controversial incidents involving Galliano shouting anti-sematic slurs at various people, he was ultimately fired from Dior and his popularity declined dramatically.
Before this however, his designs were beautiful and elegant, fusing tradition with contemporary, focussing mainly on feminine garments, often long dresses with large voluminous skirts. His historic inspired designs, allow for a classic and stylish look, bought into the modern day with a pricey label. Delicate folds, expensive fabrics, layering and bold colours were all iconic elements of his pieces. Many of them have been likened to costume designs because of the extravagant silhouettes and embellishments. The embellishments are detailed and precise, making the pieces even more eye catching and impactful. The models that wore his pieces on catwalks, were often donned with flamboyant makeup that complemented his works on the body. Pulling inspiration from different cultures, Galliano was able to present many unique garments that all have his signature look on them.
